Hi there, my name is Jeff Arthur with The Values Conversation here today talking about spiritual growth and some basic bible study understandings. I don’t know about you but a lot of times that I talk with people they’re overwhelmed by the bible. “I don’t know. I know, Jeff, I need to know more about the bible but I don’t know where to start. I don’t even know what to do. I don’t understand anything about it.” What I want to do today is just give some very quick basic tips.

Ask yourself whenever you’re going to read a part of the bible. Who’s writing? Who was this person and are they writing to? Some letters are to a person. Some letters are to a group of people. Some letters were to a region, in the New Testament especially, written to a region or to a specific church. Who’s writing and who’s the audience? What was the timeline that they wrote in? When it happened. Especially in the New Testament. The destruction of Jerusalem in the year 70 AD was a huge, huge thing that happened in history. Were those letters written before or after the destruction? What’s that about? What was the timeline? Who’s the audience? What was going on around it? What took place?

The more I ask myself these questions and I look up those answers and then start reading, the more I understand what the author was trying to say. My name is Jeff Arthur from The Values Conversation. Use a study bible, ask yourself these questions and don’t be afraid of God’s word. Find out more about us online at tvcleadership.com.
