Hi there. My name is Jeff Arthur with The Values Conversation. Here today to talk to us about, we’re going to get what we expect and what we’re looking for.

You’ve heard this before. I don’t mean to tell you anything you don’t already know, but I want to remind you of something that we all understand, and that is that we’re going to find exactly what we’re looking for in relationships with the people around us, whether that’s in our social relationships, whether that’s in our family relationships, or whether that — wait for it — is the relationships with our coworkers. A leaders, if we’re looking for problems, if we’re looking for flaws, if we’re looking for failures, if we’re looking for screw-ups that people are doing, we’re going to find them.

And conversely, if we’re looking for people who are making great strides in what they’re doing, if we’re looking for people who are growing and developing and accomplishing the tasks that we sent them out to do, even if there’s mistakes but they’re still moving forward, we’re going to find those characteristics in people as well.

Be careful what you’re looking for because if you’re looking for the negative, quote unquote the negative, and you reinforce that, that’s exactly what you’re going to get in the people around us. But if we’re looking for the positive, and that’s what we reinforce, that’s what we’re going to get more of from the people also. Just a reminder, as a leader, we’re always going to find, and we’re always going to get what we’re looking for in the people around us.
