Hi there, my name is Jeff Arthur from the Values Conversation, here to talk about keeping it real.

One of the first things as leader that you have to understand is that if you’re a phony, you’re dead. That’s the way it is. You can’t lead and be a phony, you can’t be a fake. One of the keywords that is becoming more and more apparent, and more and more used in business today is authenticity, or transparency, and while it can get overused, the truth of the matter is that it carries extraordinary power.

You the leader, are you being authentic with your people? Are you being open with them, now I’m not talking about where you share things you shouldn’t share, and if you don’t know what that line is between what I should and what I shouldn’t share, then you probably shouldn’t be the leader.

You want to recognize that vulnerability, just a little bit with your people, goes a long way. They don’t have to know all the things you struggle with, but it helps whenever they know that you can struggle a little bit with things too, for example, if you have some person that you’re working with and they have trouble doing whatever with the project, and you authentically say to them “Hey, you know what, I struggle with this too, here’s what I learned,”, or heres how I fix this, or heres how I solve the problem, that goes a long way. Be authentic, be real, help them know that you are human too, believe it or not.
