Hi there, my name is Jeff Arthur with the Values Conversation here to talk to you about a quote from Phil Jackson, former NBA coach. He says, “you can’t force your will on people. If you want them to act differently, you need to inspire them to change themselves.” There is just a tremendous quote for leadership and what our jobs are. To inspire our people to be better, but they have to be willing to make the choice themselves. How do they do that? By watching you. By watching me. By seeing the example that is set and understanding that there is more out there. Whatever that is, whatever that looks like. We as leaders think it’s so easy. Well I’m paying you, therefore you do this, or you do that, or I’m telling you to do X. We may be able to get away with that for a little while, short term, but the long term understanding is that no one’s going to change unless they want to do it themselves.
We can’t control their actions, we can’t control their thoughts, but we can inspire them and set the example to help them grow and want to make those changes themselves. We cannot enforce our will, but we can make a difference through our own learning, our own growing, our own development of emotional intelligence, our own leadership development, our own setting the example, where they see something and somebody that they want to be more like and they want to change that. Are you the inspiration that you want everybody to be in your company? Are you setting that example for them to aspire to be like that?
