Hi there. I’m Jeff Arthur with the Values Conversation here to talk to you today about something that as a business owner or leader or executive, you may not think a lot about, but it is so important for us as leaders to be approachable. One of the things that we can work on and have and connect with our people about is through a sense of humor, to have a sense of humor about what we’re doing, to have a sense of humor about ourselves. Self deprecation goes a long way. When I talk about sense of humor though, I’m not talking about a sharp wit where I’m cutting people. I’m not talking about sarcasm. I’m not talking about coming across as a jerk while you’re trying to be funny.
I’m talking about developing a connection with your people where you’re able to laugh at things. Man, it’s so important whenever they see that you can laugh at yourself, the mistakes you make, laugh at yourself whenever you didn’t understand something, to just enjoy the journey and help them know that is’ not always serious and it’s not always life or death, and sometimes we can just enjoy ourselves. You may struggle with the same thing I do because a lot of people don’t understand my sense of humor because I’m surrounded by people who aren’t as developed as me, but that’s something that we can work on.
