Hi there, my name is Jeff Arthur with The Values Conversation. We’re going through the highlights of the Old Testament and we’re talking today about Abraham and his nephew, Lot.

We talked last week about how Lot had chosen the Jordan Valley and the best of the best, and how that was going to get him in trouble. Now stay with me here on this tie-in. I don’t know if you ever saw the old western movie with John Wayne called “Chishum,” but there’s a point in time in the movie where everything is going south in the town and Billy The Kid’s blowing everything up. News gets to John Wayne and he’s going to go in to town, and he starts pulling in all of his ranch hands and all of his servants from all over to go in town, and they’re going to take on all the bad guys. Keep that in the back of your mind.

Go into Genesis chapter 14 with Abraham and Lot, Lot’s down in the valley, he’s in the best of the best, but it wasn’t Israel back then. There were all kinds of different peoples and countries and peoples around. There was a couple of “Kingdoms” up at the northern part of what is now Israel, and they decided to wage war against the, I guess the kings and the cities in the Jordan Valley, and they did and they won.

Started taking the spoils of war north with them, Lot was captured. Him and his family were taken captive. Word got to Abraham that his nephew was in danger. Abraham, a single man, gathered his servants and herdsmen together, like Chisum with all of his ranchers, and went after Lot and went after these two kings who had waged war on an entire area and won.

Abraham, with his camp cleaned their clock with the power of God. He was over-matched but motivated. He went and got his nephew and brought him home. Never underestimate the power of the Lord in your life. Never underestimate the power of God no matter what the circumstances are, no matter what the odds are. Be smart, don’t put yourself in a stupid situation like Lot. But when it’s time to go, trust in the Lord to take care of you and trust in the Lord to have your back.
