Hi there, my name is Jeff Arthur with the values conversation. Here today to talk about not embarrassing our people. Everybody makes mistakes. We all understand that, and we all repeat that. We just don’t like it whenever the people are around us and make mistakes. Whenever they do, whether they’re our team or in our building or part of our company. The very worst thing that we can do with our people is to single them out, scold them, talk them down, dress them down, whatever phrase it is that you use where you single them out and made them look like somebody’s who’s inferior. Whenever that happens, whenever you embarrass our people, things go bad.

Think about it. Whenever we do that with people on our team or people in our company and we single them out or we embarrass them, there’s only one way to go. The only thing they can do is defend themselves and the only thing I can do is be angry about it, because you’ve put them in a bad spot. It’s much different than talking to them privately, asking what was going on, gathering information, understand why that decision was made. Was it the training fault? Was not just trained well enough? Was it just a lack of judgment an error? Who knows. There’s a thousand things that can go into it, but singling out and embarrassing people never works, no matter how much we just wish they would get it. Respect your people, things go a lot better.
