Hi. I’m Jeff Arthur with The Values Conversation. One of the things that I do as an executive coach in development of leadership in these different companies that I work with and different executives that I work with, all the time there’s communication problems. What is fascinating to me is that we see this played out in a thousand different ways, but just one example is that if you sit down and watch any kind of sitcom on TV from the last thirty years, they have a great time with this, where people are communicating, talking, and one doesn’t understand the other and then all of a sudden, hilarity and hi-jinks ensue.

Except in real life, in your company. Whenever people don’t understand what the other one is saying, whenever terms are not defined, whenever communication is not clear, hijinks and hilarity does not ensue, money is lost, attitudes are broken, people are upset. There’s all kinds of problems that come out from the fact that “Wait a minute. I didn’t understand what you were saying. Well I thought you were meaning this. Well I thought you said that.” It is so important in the leadership realm to make for sure that you are setting the example, whenever you communicate to define your terms, and make for sure that people that you’re working with, they define and communicate their terms as well.
